He serves as Associate Professor in the Music Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell teaching in the Sound Recording Technology program. In the studio, he produces, records, mixes, and masters music across genres with a particular focus on contemporary classical and experimental releases. He also provides post-production audio work for film projects including sound design and rerecording mixing. He composes film scores, concert hall works, installation pieces, music for radio and podcasts, and songs. Lanier holds Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in Composition and Computer Technologies from the University of Virginia and a B.A. in Music from Columbia University. Slowed down, moved to piano, and reharmonized, the iconic riff goes ambient. Combined with haunting harmonies and atmospheric production, the new arrangement gives a fresh meaning to the weary commuting narrator’s words. The central guitar solo pays tribute to Billy Gibbons’s playing on the original track by finding a very different sort of virtuosity to match the new feel.
